City of Lexington

With two picturesque and historic college campuses, a quaint downtown established in the late 1700s, and walkable, well-preserved residential neighborhoods, Lexington offers irresistible charm and irreplaceable character.

Lexington was established as the county seat, and its most consistent economic engines since the mid-19th century have been institutions of government and of higher education.  Washington & Lee University and Law School, and the Virginia Military Institute, remain the city’s principal employers today.

With just over 7,000 residents, Lexington is a small, sophisticated town that attracts people from all across the world. Relaxed charm, southern hospitality, and modern drive all mingle successfully here. Newcomers are welcome, too!

Downtown, merchants invite you to browse through antique shops, art galleries, book stores, and boutiques. Take note of the distinctive brick sidewalks, and appreciate the small parks at Hopkins Green, old Courthouse Square, and the Woods Creek Trail that ends at Jordan’s Point Park on the Maury River.

Savor regional and international flavors at Lexington’s microbreweries, restaurants, and coffee shops, and enjoy small-batch ice cream or locally produced gelato afterwards. Entertainment options include live music at indoor and outdoor venues, movies at the State Theater, and sporting events, concerts, and plays on the W&L campus, or on post at VMI.

Historical museums throughout Lexington offer educational exhibits and events that attract diverse audiences of locals and visitors. Opportunities to meet people with similar interests also abound, with numerous clubs and volunteer-based organizations located in Lexington.

Residents are drawn to Lexington because of work and retirement opportunities, a low crime rate, abundant scenic character, and lifelong learning opportunities.  Many W&L and VMI alumni and parents choose to purchase a second home or spend an active retirement here. We know Lexington VA is a one-of-a-kind place, offering a truly rare combination of small-town charm, city sophistication, historic character, and quick access to outdoor recreation.

City of Buena Vista

Buena Vista translates to “good view” — but this moniker doesn’t adequately capture the area’s stunning landscape.
